Unified Voice for Hong Kong Diaspora: European Coalition of Hong Kong Grassroots Organizations Launches

30 September, 2024

Today marks the official launch of The European Hong Kong Diaspora Alliance (EHKDA), a coalition of grassroots organisations from across Europe, dedicated to advocating for the rights and interests of the Hong Kong diaspora in Europe.

Since 2019, a significant portion of Hongkongers has moved abroad, establishing numerous grassroots organisations across EU countries. Recognizing the growing need for collaboration, EHKDA was founded to bring together these dispersed communities and provide a unified voice for the diaspora across Europe.

The Alliance spans multiple European countries, including Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and beyond, united by a shared mission: to strive for a free and democratic Hong Kong.

EHKDA brings together a diverse group of community leaders and activists with a common purpose – to empower the Hong Kong diaspora, preserve its rich cultural heritage, and foster strong interconnections within the European community. As founding members, we believe in the importance of cultural exchange, collaboration, and building a robust, united diaspora.

Our Key Objectives:

Empowering the Hong Kong diaspora in Europe

  • Exercise and defend political freedoms and human rights enshrined by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the European Convention on Human Rights.

  • Engage with European policymakers advocating for policies that are conducive to Hong Kong’s democratic transformation, to realise the freedom, autonomy and democracy that were guaranteed promised in the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Hong Kong.

  • Ensure the representation and basic rights of Hongkongers in Europe are guaranteed in their host countries according to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Cultural Exchange and Preservation

  • Actively preserve and promote Hongkonger culture, including language, arts, and traditions, to keep the rich heritage of Hong Kong alive and accessible for future generations.

Community Building

  • Foster a sense of community among Hongkongers in Europe, offering a support network that spans European countries.

Networking and Collaboration

  • Build networks and collaborate with other diaspora groups, civil society organisations, and international bodies to advocate for common causes, including human rights, democracy, climate justice, racial equality, and social justice.

Public Awareness and Educational Initiatives

  • Inform relevant European stakeholders about Hong Kong’s history, culture, language and the latest development to foster connections between Europeans and Hong Kong diaspora in Europe.

“We have spent the past two years carefully preparing and building this Alliance.” said Amy Siu, General Secretary of EHKDA. “Our goal is to ensure that EHKDA stands as a legitimate, well-organised voice for the Hong Kong diaspora, ready to advocate for our community across Europe. All of us in the Alliance are excited about working with each other and eager to realise the full potential of our united effort.”
